My husband and I are considering moving from nj to sc. I have some concerns about the move now that i have been diagnosed with cf. I am worried about changing health insurance. Will insurance from a new ins company cover my cf needs or will they call it a "preexisting condition"? Will I be able to continue on kalydeco since i am currently on it off label? What are the adult cf drs like in the charleston area? I'd love to hear if anyone else has had experience with this and how it turned out for them. Thanks for your input in advance.

They can't exclude as a preexistingcondit condition BUT they all have different coverage re prescriptions and may not allow some enzymes and not others to and they very well could deny coverage off label for kalydeco...are you in the recent sNDA for kalydeco so you'd be on label shortly? For me, or rsonally if kalydeco is working well I wouldn't chance being denied off label. Good luck with your decision.

Congrats on the move! Be sure that your new clinic is a CF Approved Care Center. This handy site will help you find one. I also wouldn't worry about the pre-existing condition. But I would make sure that your new health insurance covers you at a CF center.

In Charleston, looks like this is an option:

Medical University of South Carolina - Adult
Charleston, SC 29425

Phone: (843) 792-0729
Type: Adult
Director: Patrick A. Flume, M.D.

Like mentioned, Px coverage, and coverage of an approved center are a major focus (I do have 1 brother whose insurance doesn't cover the CF center, and he's found a work around so that labs, PFTs, and clean-outs are done at an in-network medical center but he still sees the CF center for the clinic visit itself). A general bit of advice, try to time your insurance move so you can refill all your scripts right before the move (especially helpful if you get 90 day supplies). Then get to work plenty early on script refills once you have the information from your new insurance. It also might be a good time to do a cleanout prior to an insurance move (depending on how well you are feeling). Moving is a bit stressful and it is nice to know that you have extra health (and plenty of meds) to help get you through whatever roadblocks or transitional headache pop up as you adjust to a new area and a new insurance. Also getting refills or doing a cleanout would get any major medical bills out of the way on your old deductible and out of pocket max so you'd have a bit of time to recover financially before the big medical bills hit again.

Thank you for your replies. My mutation is d1125h so it will soon be on label for they kalydeco, yay. I'm glad to hear they can't exclude me due to my condition. I don't have any deductibles with my ins now, but it is a great idea to call the people i will most likely be insured under to find out if they cover services at the local cf center. My current ins won't let me do 90 day refills, but i will definitely make sure to fill Everton before we go. We are planning the move for this summer if we both get positions so i have some time to look into things. .
