MRSA concern

I guess I need some reassurance and some education about this. This afternoon the faculty at our school got an email about a kid at school having MRSA. He was sent home pending medical documentation.

Since I haven't been to school to ask the specifics, I am a little worried. I assume this is a case of a skin infection, but is this the same bug that can affect CFers' lungs? Josh goes to that same school, so obviously he uses the same gym, caf, nurse etc.

Can anyone help me on this?

Hey Jane.. THe problem is MRSA is popping up everywhere, it is the same MRSA that goes into our lungs... Thing is as I am sure you know, all MRSA is Staph that is resistant to methicillin which is a type of antibiotic... as you know Staph is everywhere.. all over our skin etc...

Kids more and more outside of hospitals are getting MRSA infections, mostly from scratches and cuts on their skin that are getting infected.. MRSA is not airborn it is contact..... so your sons need to be careful..

Mostly it is spread in locker rooms, gyms, sharing the same equipment etc... Lots and lots of good hand washing is vital.....

As a nurse in the ER I Have seen many, many babies come in with MRSA on their butts from daycare workers not washing the changing table in between changes...

All I know is the kids would be able to get MRSA much in the same way they would get Staph, PA or any other yuck bug.....

The rule as far as I know is kids are still able to go to school with an acute MRSA infection as long as they don't participate in contact sports, and they keep the infected area covered at all times.. I don't know if it is the same where you are or not.....

Good luck..
