MRSA, Staph and Breastmilk

Shannon, Great suggestions! After seeing your message, I called my lactation consultant and she had a few resources she was going to tap into today and will report back to me this evening with what the consensus is. Like you she said, if he does have cf it would be a shame to discontinue bf'ing because she has heard of cfers not showing symptoms until they stopped the bf'ing...too many times to be a coincidence. I tried to use Hale's site but it was pretty useless with me not being an MD. IIt seems you can't even use the search command if not a registered user. Reading down the posts nothing jumped out regarding MRSA. At least not with my specific circumstances...no skin lesions, etc. I looked for an email address for him with no luck. I thought my l.c. might have an easier time at it.

Lauren,

I am making an educated guess(dont' have direct experience) but I doubt you passed MRSA by your breastmilk. If you had MRSA infection from mastitis, my guess is you would have felt very sick and needed IV antibiotics to get better. It may be that if you culture MRSA in your lungs, your baby may have picked it up in the environment somehow. Maybe this example will help you, when Maggie was 5 months old I had a terrible case of strep throat. I nursed her before, after and during the strep throat. Her pediatrician even cultured Maggie to make sure she didn't get strep, to be safe. She never got strep from me. I guess it's a little different cause strep doesn't get on your skin. But just my train of thought.

This website has been mentioned on the forums before, but I thought I would post a link so that you could see if you find anything useful here.

2 things-

About Dr. Hale's website-I called my local La Leche chapter and the leader posted a question for me. Like you said, it is impossible to do unless you are a professional but she was more than happy to help me once I explained my unusal circumstances.

And, I wanted to mention kellymom.com-Shannon helped me find them. The LC's there know TONS of info about BF. Check their site out. I have found it invaluable.

I'll be contacting you.
