MRSA Staph

My granddaughter has recently had a positive sputum culture for mrsa staph, a colonization, not so much an infection. She seems to be a healthy 5 month old, doesn't act sick, except we are filling her full of antibiotics. With all the media scare the past few days, my daughter (Nichole), Ella's mom has been dealing with other friends with small children being afraid to be around Nichole and Ella at all. This isolates them even more. We all understand the importance of handwashing and cleanliness, etc... but people are afraid if they are in the same room they will be exposed. Is there anyone that could tell me what they have done in this situation or tips on keeping Ella Staph free, or is this just part of CF life? thank you for your time.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here...

But Ella is not going to make the other kids sick unless one of two things:
1. She's around kids who are immuno-suppressed (tx patients, other CFers, people on chemo, etc)
OR
2. She coughs up something from her lungs and literally rubs it on another kid.

The kind killing kids down in Virginia is contagious through skin contact, and it's a different animal than the kind we get in our lungs.

I myself cultured MRSA 6 years ago, when I was 16. We happened to talk about it in class today, and no one knew what it was, so I offered to explain what it meant. Then one girl goes "Why do you know that?" And I told them it was because I had it in my lungs.

I thought they were going to stone me to death. lol But after I explained the difference, no problems.

In short... as long as she isn't spitting on kids (or coughing into her hand and then putting her lung goo all over the table), and there are no other sick kids in her class, there are no issues to worry about.

What Em said!

I think there is going to be a huge scare over who is prone & where/how to develope MRSA!

Most of the time (like Rosie Odonnell had MRSA on her hand & almost lost her hand) its skin to skin contact.

What we have in our lungs is not harmful to the average person. If we cough up & spread as Emily so eliquently put it then "Maybe" because I am not sure if that "form" isnt altered some how!

Reassure them that unless them are immune compromised they are OK! Diabetics with wounds are probably more of a hazard then a CFer....

As far as protecting her........common sense, hand washing & infection control when in hospitals, doctors etc which is where all this crap stems from!

My doctor told me that with most of what we grow(including MRSA) for healthy people you'd have to be rubbing your phlem into open wounds or something. Basic handwashing is fine. If they have a kid who is immue suppressed, that's an issue.
Her clinic might have brochures or something she can give the other parents? I know the school booklets from my clinic deal with who we are/are not contagious to.
