MSSA

Just have a small question. Stacia had her sputum test done about 4 months ago and was diagnosed with MSSA. The bacteria is not bothering her so they didn't give her anything for it. We went back for our yearly check up about three weeks ago. We had another sputum test done then. Just got the results a couple of days ago and she is still culturing MSSA. Onece again the paper said Keep up the good work.

My question is, will she always have this unless she gets medacine for it. Is it a big deal to be carrying this? Will it ever cause her problems? Is she a threat to other?
Can it turn into MRSA?

Sorry so many questions but not really sure anything about this just not sure if anything could happen out of her having this. Thanks

Will she always culture: most likely, staph is very hardy and without treatment it is not going anywhere.

Is it a big deal: IMHO no, some may differ but it is common, and many dr's opt not to treat unless it is causing specific issues.

Threat to others: only if they have CF, and then you should be using precautions anyways. Normal lungs can control it w/o issue normally.

Can it turn to MRSA, no. They are different 'bugs'. At some point MSSA did develop into what is known as MRSA but over years and exposure to TONS of abx which is not going to happen in a single patient.

In the end, I think a quick check would show MSSA to be very common among patients here, my son included. While not something you want per se, it is not what I would consider a 'biggie' in the scope of life w/CF.

My son actually cultured MRSA, and our pulm told us b/c of the high probability of contamination if he wasn't symptomatic he was going to assume the the specimen was probably tainted. It was done in the hospital where our CF center is. He also cultured Staph pneumonae from his lungs directly, but that wasn't treated either. What's up with not treating the staph?

Alyssa has always cultured MSSA otherwise known as Staph A. No one treats unless she gets symtoms and even when we do treat it, she'll get one clear culture and then the Staph will be back the next culture.
