Hello,

Does anyone take this and what do you think of it? My CF doc a few years ago said it usually does "nothing for CF cough", but I don't see why it wouldn't other than our mucus is too thick, but even then, why wouldn't it help thin it a little bit?

I've used it a day or two in the past and never got any huge relief from it, but that was when I had a cold and now I'm thinking of adding it daily. Does anyone do this?

Experiences?

Well, guaifenesin, which is the main ingredient in Mucinex is not well studied. The mechanism of action is thought to be from irritation of the gastric mucosa resulting in increased respiratory fluid volumes and decreased mucus viscosity. I could not find any information as to whether the CFTR would inhibit this response or not, but it is reasonable to think so. Also, guaifenesin is used in veterinary medicine as a muscle relaxant, although it is given IV. It could be that even in oral form guaifenesin might retain a little of its muscle relaxant qualities and slightly suppress cough, which would be bad for a CF Pt.

I would ask you doc next time if he could elaborate a little as to why it doesn't work or isn't good for CF Pts.

Thanks, Jonathan!

Actually, the doc was a previous doc that I LOVED, but don't see anymore as he's 400+ miles away. He said I'm "welcomed to take it, but it probably won't do a thing for a CF cough so you're kinda wasting your money." So, cause of that, I never took it much. However, lately I've noticed I have a really super dry cough (I don't FEEL congestion in my chest to cough out, but also have never NOT had a productive cough), so thought I'd give it a try. My FEV1 is back down to baseline after a jump a few months ago from abx. So, I was just trying to think up ways to get that "productive" cough back (I do h.s., vest, huffing, etc. and nothing is working)

Hmmmmm......
