Mucus Plug - Pulmozyme

Sounds like appropriate treatment for me.

CF is all about being onthe offense, not defense. Sounds like the docs are doing an excellent job in being proactive.

This will ultimately preserve lung function and post-pone death.

I did the study (clinical study) for pulmozyme in 1994 and have been on it ever since...although something strange happened a little while back...it seemed to cause hemotysis. My Docs. say it is a side effect sometimes and yes, I do sound a bit raspy (my husband loves it)which they say is another side effect. I stopped it for about a month and boy did I feel the difference! yUCK! Now I'm back on it, and I'm drowning in my own mucus!

I do get plugs every once in a while...they look like little inch worms and feel hard to the touch. Interesting little buggers though...think, that was the size of the airway it was trapping!

Yay Pulmozyme! (or what I used to call it..DNAse!)<img src="i/expressions/neb.gif" border="0">

I've been on Pulmozyme since Decemeber and my lung functions jumped back up 8%! Of course they dropped again cause I got sick but thats besides the point. CF is the type of disease that needs to be kept at bay with meds and treatments. Waiting until it is absolutel needed is not the way to go. I think being on Pulmo for the long run is a good idea!

as was already mentioned it is always best to be aggressive in the treatment, especially with the young kids you dont want to wait until there is a problem to figure out what to do and I commend your doctors for not just assuming all was ok based on abscence of cough/mucous. I am sure it is hard to start these types treatments but it really is a great thing. Most of my issues I currently battle are from damage done since I was NOT receiving appropriate care.

If I had to pick only one maintenance medicine I could take it would be pulmozyme it does WONDERS for me and I even take 2 vials a day now because I wanted to--its that great.
