My appointment yesterday....

Hey All,

Ok, so I had my appointment at St. Vincent's yesterday. Where am I? Home or hospital? Home. Yeah!!! BUT......haha a big but.....

To start off I'm seeking all advice here, any opinion is welcome.

Ok, so I'm feelin good. No blood since last week. I'm taking deeper breaths than I've ever been able to. Thin, white-ish sputum. But, I have these horrible swollen glands under my neck. They've been present for several days now. Of course I also have the ever present sinus infection. Which is in the process of being treated. (I had a CAT scan yesterday for it.)
No increased cough. No fever. Again-lungs feel incredible. To be able to breathe deeply without gagging is so awesome-you know.

So I go into the office excited b/c I know she's gonna send me home and say-Miracle! To start she doesn't want to do PFT's-b/c she's worried they may be to hard on my lungs. She doesn't want to break any tissue. I tell her I haven't bled in 4 days, and have been doing breathing exercises that deep anyway. Still no PFTs. Ok. I was dissapointed b/c I was very anxious to see what they were after all my hard work these few months.

In general she was very skeptical -I think- that I was saying I felt so good. Believe me-with all the hard work I've been doing, if I needed to be admitted I would! I don't want to blow my whole summer. So she sent me home with strict rest and don't- overdo- the- chest- PT rules. I don't know, I feel like she didn't believe me. Maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway- I was upset at first about the visit. But after I calmed down I knew she was just being cautious. She has my best interests only. I do trust her judgement.

I guess it's hard to be brought down when you feel good. When you feel good, you want your doctor to be happy for you, you know?

So-here's my question which is open to opinion: Why do you think I have these huge swollen glands? Have you ever had them? What have you done for swollen glands?
What confuses me is the only time I get swollen glands like this is when I have a horrible head cold/sinus thing or the flu. Other than that, my coughing is decreased and sputum is fine. Unless this sinus problem is progressing and getting worse.

I would welcome any suggestions b/c I'm very frustrated right now. Other than this thing, I feel great. And I just want to enjoy these clear lungs right now while I have them.

First of all Christian.....Dr. Walker did the same thing to be a few appointments ago. Everyone else in the office was happy for me as I did my dance. I asked why she didnt seem pleased. She said she was very pleased, but she has learned that with me....too much congrats & I tend to slack off. She has learned my habits so well that its scary. If it still bugs you then address it with her. You know she is looking out for your interest, but she needs to be told when something irks you. As far as the gland thing...I get them occaisionally. I honestly dont know if it was ever connected to much except when it was the obvious head cold. Mine always seem to go away. I know I am not much use to you, but it could very well be from your sinus problems.

Congrats on feeling so good Christian! Does this mean you were able to enjoy the night out with hubby? As for the swollen glands thing, the only time I ever get that is if I have strep or laryngitis. Any kind of throat infection and my glads swell up like crazy, but I don't ever get a head cold or sinus problems. Did you ask your doc what it may be?

YAY CHRISTIAN!!!! Glad you didn't have to be admitted!!! That is awesome!
Don't feel bad about Dr.W. She is just looking out for you. How did your x-ray look? Was she happy w/ it? Did you get all the usual bloodwork, sputum culture etc.? Or did you just consult w/ the Dr.? That stinks that you couldn't do the pft. You are probably so curious to see results from all your hard work. Don't worry- there is always next time!!!

Sorry I don't have any advice on the swollen glands. Never had them! But I do have a horrible head cold right now and so do my kids. Maybe that is the cause? Or the sinus thing.....

Well I hope you had a great time in the city last night.

Thanks alot Uli-Epstein Barr........you stinker. Thats's all I need.

Thanks for the kind wishes. Melissa-you're a stinker too. Of course you're "of use to me". Thanks for caring. And you're right-I bet she wasn't overwhelmed b/c she didn't want me to slack off. Afterall-I just got my butt in shape only a few months ago. So she wants to make sure I keep going. I don't know why I didn't think of that. That's it. And-if she really thought I was sick she'd have slapped me into the hospital. I feel better now.

I don't know how the Xray results were. They didn't call yet. I only did the xray-and consult. No bloods, ect. In one month I return, or a sooner if I'm not 100%.

I have high hopes that fixing my sinuses will improve my overall lung health. They drip into my lungs all night-I can feel it. It wakes me up.

To Liz: Hey babe-yes we went to the hotel. Man, we got an upgrade for FREE to a suite. It was great! We didn't do anything, outside of the room that is....heh he he. It was more fun staying in doors and too cold outside in NYC this week!!

Hi.
Ok it's Wed. I woke up with huge swollen glands and throat. I can't swallow. I was worried and in a lot of pain so I went to the local family doctor. He said I have tonsillitis. Yeah. He said I have white spots all over my throat and tonsils. Now I new at this whole sinus thing. I've only had trouble for a year now, and only minor trouble. But this is BAD. So I bit the bullet and called Walker. (cf center).

The weird thing is, I'm not coughing any more than usual. No green spit. Just what's coming out of my nose and down my throat. I've also been on Cipro for a week and it's obviously done nothing.

I'm waiting for the doc to call me back. I don't know what she'll say. Is this IV worthy? I don't know-she's the expert. All I can say is I feel SICK. Shoot me-sick. Have any of you done IVs for a sinus/head thing?

Well I just answered my own question. She just called me back. She wants me to be admitted. I'm really bummed. I feel like a failure.
I won't be able to talk to you all for a while, so hope I'm out soon. Thanks for all your good thoughts.
Love, Christian

Aww Christian, you're not a failure. Look how good you've been doing. Yes you may be going to hospital, but its for your throat, not your lungs. That's one good thing right? Once you're on IVs hopefully they'll be able to catch it before it goes into your chest, where we all know it will get worse, and you will feel worse.

You'll be in my thoughts. Keep us posted when you can!

I am sorry you have to go into the hospital.
But please please do not think of yourself as a failure.
You did GREAT!!!
This swollen gland thing-- that's no typical CF thing -- that's not happening because you didn't do a good job of taking care of yourself.
Best to have it nipped in the bud right away.

ANd then you can come home all healthy to loving hubby and puppy and keep on keeping on.

Everyone will be here for you.
