I wouldnt let her stay withYOU. I am more like Em regarding my concerns. I take precautions (as we will at my party), but I dont not intermingle with CFers solely because they have CF.

Precautions is necessary & it depends on how bad you want this. The langauage barrier has me a bit concerned. I hope this doesnt confuse how you wish the two of you to be with each other.

Good Luck & Enjoy if she does come!

I would take the middle of the road approach -- have her stay somewhere besides your house and meet with her for out door activities -- be careful with the 3 foot rule, no hand shakes, hugs etc, and be careful when coughing around each other.

If you have already "mentored" her about CF, this process will be no different - you are educating her about cross contamination and protecting each other's health -- you mentioned you have PA .... does that mean she does not? So having her stay with you may put her more at risk than you.... either way I vote for visiting outdoors or somewhere other than your personal living space -- this is what our CF doctor recommended when our daughter wanted to spend time with another girl with CF.... stay 3 feet away - outdoors preferably and no time in each other's households or in closed in places like side by side in a car.

Educate and inform, plan your activities and actions, and you should be able to enjoy spending time with her without risking each others health.

Best wishes!

Ask her to go to her regular CF doc and have a culture done, or if she can't do that then ask her to obtain the results of her most recent culture. Have her email you the complete results (strains and resistance) and bring them to your doc/nurse for clearance. I participate in CF fundraisers for the national foundation w/ two other CFers who happen to be sisters. We have used this cuture approach for years and never had any cross infection issues. It's safer than just going off verbal "I have this strain" b/c 1) it's more accurate and up to date, and 2) it shows weather individual strains of PA or whatever else have developed resistance to certion abx.

Beyond that, normal rules: don't share personal items or drinks, don't make out with your cousin, wash your hands A LOT and keep your apartment CLEAN.

I don't think it is necessary to know / demand to know via a sputum culture what bacteria people are culturing. As Amy said, they're unreliable, they're retrospective and bacteria such as B. Cepacia is known to lay dormant in the lungs for up to 2 years before ever being discovered on a sputum culture.

The safest approach I think is to use a 'universal precautions' approach like all health professionals use towards patients. You assume that any / all people with CF potentially posses multi-resistant bacteria and even cepacia and guard yourself that way. Always stay min 3 feet away, wash hands, avoid sharing eating utensils, avoid shaking hands / kissing etc. Unfortunatley, that's the way it has to be.

Relying on someone's sputum culture results I think, is a false sense of safety and just encourages stigmatisation sometimes. Assume that every person with CF potentially harbours multi-resistant bacteria/s and protect yourself and them on that basis.
