my doc told me to lose weight:(: and the RT I had

I have to lose 5 pounds. First time ever in my whole life that a doc has told me to lose weight. So weird for me. I'm gonna do veggies and fruit over the summer. Darn CF hunger cravings.

I had to go in for PFT's to see if a tune-up might be in order. Well I wait a 1/2 an hour at my clinic to find out that the PFT machine is broken and here is a script to go up to the hospital to do it, ughh! Beautiful day and that is the last thing I want to do. A phone call would have been nice. So I go to an unfamiliar place with an unfamiliar RT. I like to do things a certain way when I do PFT's to get the best results and I like to do more than 3. She would have no part of it and said something like "we'll just get the results and send in your 3 and you don't concern yourself". I then explained to her that there is a lot more to it than that!!! That this will determine if I get a PICC line or not so "yes, I am concerned". I got nowhere with her and I was not in the mood to argue and at that point I wanted out of there. I also like a 5 minute break when doing them and I felt rushed by this woman. I told her not to share with me the results cuz I have a great weekend planned and I prefer to think there won't be talk of a PICC next week. Some hospital workers just don't get it.

Bottom line, I don't think the results are probably a good reflection of where I am at. When my doc gets back in town next week the machine will probably be working and I will just do them in his office cuz I doubt the ones I did are indicative of where I am at. Nice waste of a perfectly beautiful day for me.

Any other RT horror stories....Graves, take notes<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Sorry to hear you a had rough time. There's nothing worse than being rushed when doing your blows. I find it takes a good few minutes just to get your breath back after such exertion and you wanna be back to normal before your next go. I too like to know what they are cos often my first few are poor i get better as i go along.

Hope they are ok next week

Have a good weekend <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I did a PFT at our local hospital once due to convenience only and refuse to do it again.

The technique was totally different. I had to stand which is not what we do at our clinic & I thought I would pass out.

I dont care how much a tech thinks they know about CF unless you deal with it daily you dont understand how difficult it is for a CFer especially one whose CF has progressed!

I am sorry to hear this & I would have flipped a lid on this RT~~~

skye, you don't want to lose weight; you want to lose fat. It's important you keep your lean muscle mass.
<br> <br>
Living off of fruits and veggies is not a great idea. You will lose the weight too fast and much of it will be muscle mass. This may make your lung function go down.
<br> <br>
Live off of whole foods... meat, veggies, olive oil, whole grains, beans, etc... Keep your protein up and count your calories. It's fine to cheat once in a blue moon. Aim to lose a pound every 2 weeks or so.
<br> <br>
And exercise is especially important. Weight bearing exercise and aerobic exercise are both necessary. I know some women worry about being 'big and bulky' from lifting weights, but that's a myth... women don't have enough testosterone to build any noticable amount of muscle. Weight lifting has many more positive effects than cardio does.
