skye, you don't want to lose weight; you want to lose fat. It's important you keep your lean muscle mass.

Living off of fruits and veggies is not a great idea. You will lose the weight too fast and much of it will be muscle mass. This may make your lung function go down.

Live off of whole foods... meat, veggies, olive oil, whole grains, beans, etc... Keep your protein up and count your calories. It's fine to cheat once in a blue moon. Aim to lose a pound every 2 weeks or so.

And exercise is especially important. Weight bearing exercise and aerobic exercise are both necessary. I know some women worry about being 'big and bulky' from lifting weights, but that's a myth... women don't have enough testosterone to build any noticable amount of muscle. Weight lifting has many more positive effects than cardio does.</end quote></div>

OK....I didn't expect to get my own personal dietician. Thanks so much for the input. I really don't have a clue how to do this in a safe manner. When I do try to lose weight, I do tend to get run down. I do have concerns about eating more protein though! I have been diabetic for almost 15 years...hard to believe. I am very protective of my kidneys and I tend to stay away from a lot of protein. Any advice on that end?

I forgot to add a question....why would losing weight too fast cause you to lose muscle mass and also....does an increase in weight cause a problem with lung function? I have gained about 20-25 over the last couple of years. Most of it d/t better health and some of it d/t over indulgence.

When I diet (which I am supposed to be doing now <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0"> ), I substitute my "junk" food, i.e., high sugar or high carb or high calorie stuff- desserts, cookies, etc. - even the ones with Splenda in them (I keep the Splenda ones around when I need to "cheat" because of my diabetes) with raw fruits and veggies.

Even the Splenda stuff can be hard on the caloric bottom line (ever notice that the "fake sweet" foods have a disclaimer on them? "Not a low calorie food"), but fruits and veggies are good vitamin sources and contain a lot of water, and the fruits help with my sweets craving. I also add cheeses and things like pickles, lol <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> . But I eat my regular meals (meat, fruit, veggies, and a starch) at the same time. It's kinda slow, but not as "painful" as a crash diet type of diet, since I'm not changing the regular meals. I hope that helps some. Good luck!

I was only diagnosed a few months ago with CF. For years I'd had doctors tell me I need to loose 20-40 lbs. Well for the first time in my life a doctor (my CF doc) told me it probably was a good thing that I'm over weight. I asked him if I could record that!! They still want me to loose about 15 lbs (I'm almost halfway there). If I cut out some of the late night snacking and slightly reduce portion size, and eat slower, it's not too bad & I lose weight slowly & keep it off. I have the CF appetite for sure which makes it tough! ~Juliet

Oh, and I don't understand why they couldn't just call and reschedule you for a different day when they got the machine up and running again either- a different machine done in a different manner is not going to give you a very comparble (sp) result, and it does seem like a waste of everybody's time. And, what a jerk- you're the patient, she works for you- obviously, she had forgotten that part, not to mention has a bad "bedside manner". I hate it when I get someone like that *sigh*.
