nasogastric tube

When I was in late middle school and high school, I had to put a nasogastric tube down my throat at nights a few times when I had been sick or needed to put on more weight for some reason. It was a little plastic tube that I threaded down my mouth into my throat and then swallowed and pushed down. Tape it on your face, hook up to a bag of liquid nutrition and you're off...

I haven't seen any posts of anyone else doing this, so I'm wondering if my docs were just weird or if this is something that isn't being done anymore? Is it an outdated procedure or was it never one at all?

I think the trend is now for G-tubes instead of NG tubes. Not sure why, but many doctors are suggesting them for weight gain. My boys were not given NG tubes as an option when the G-tube was discussed. I wonder if there is more compliance with a G-tube?

I realize G tube is more permanent, as it has to be placed, but I have to admit that a naso tube sounds god-awful. And if I was given the choice, it'd be for the G tube. Blech.

I am not sure. My son's doctor had him do a naso tube for 3 weeks to see if extra feedings would help. They wanted to try it out before doing surgery. Of course they seen he would gain some weight so they did the feeding tube. I couldn't imagine putting the naso tube down every night. He left his in he said it was too uncomfortable taking it in and out.

I did NG feeds for 2 maybe 3 or more years before getting my G tube....

and I wish I had of stuck to them as apposed to getting a permanent fixture

I have had a ng tube when doing golytley. I also know some of the other cf patients in our clinic were taught to drop an ng tube for feedings.

I remember reading that nasal tubes are very dangerous for children with reflux and aspiration becomes a big issue. Younger children who need tube feedings have this concern because alot of times the acid reflux keeps there enzymes from working and tubes can make you throw up for all diffrent reasons imagine having to vomit with a nasal tube. And with all the complications that tube feedings bring it is safer yet more invasive to jpeg or gastro and there for also more effective in weight gain.

Ewww, brings back memories! My son did it and it came out through his mouth, so it was threaded in his nose and out his mouth. Yuck!
