Neb question

New member
Hi, ya'll....

So, I've been doing my HS in my Pari LC neb cups. Is this ok? I feel like I'm getting the med, though it does take a long time. I use the Pari LC for every treatment I do, cause I can get them free from my CF center. And, the other nebs you can't boil. So, do you think its alright I use them for ALL my meds, HS, etc.? I do wash them out/boil before my next treatment, and don't do any mixing of meds in them.

Thanks.

you should have 1 (or 8 like me) designated for Pulmozyme that you don't ever put anything else in (easier said then done). I see no problem with using the same nebs for Tobi, HS, Albuterol, Coli, etc. ...of course not at the same time though.

Why would you not be able to put something else in a neb as long as its boiled after each treatment? Boiling should really get out all the med as well as all the germs and make it "like new", shouldn't it?

I don't know if I could keep all my "pulmozyme parts" seperate since they all look the same.

You have 8 for pulmozyme!!?!

I only use paris for max 'cuz they're so easy to clean (boil). I used to mark the part with a sharpy -- P for pulmozyme, T for tobi and leave the regular neb (albuterol and atrovent) blank. But eventually it'd wash/boil off.

I have gotten them mixed up or been not quite awake and mixed up the tops or inards. But they were clean. Memorial day weekend I forgot the lid for the pulmozyme one and had to use one of the others. The only problem I've ever had is if you use a sticky med like tobi and it doesn't get rinsed/washed out right way -- it can get plugged up.

Winace told me that he used a pin to scratch an initial of the med into his neb cup and then used red nail polish over the scratch -- it'd get into the groove and wouldn't wash off. L

I was told that I could use the same neb cups for pulmozyme as long as I washed them thouroughly after each use. I have 2 nebs for each of my boys.

I guess there's question of some residue being left in it and I even do the procedure with the hydrogen peroxide sterilization which I would think really would breakdown any residue left.

It's a pain in the butt but all my pulmozyme nebs are labelled with a 'P' and the date I started the neb since there's no way to really tell when one isn't working as effectively as it should since it's particle size that's effected.

There was another thread on this and the different methods people use for marking. Can't find it though. Here are the highlights. Some people use nail polish or other's use sharpie (this is what I use). The problem is the sharpie wears off with continued exposure to bleach, hydrogen peroxide or alcohol and maybe even from boiling. Someone had a clever solution of scratching the date into the neb and whatever you write to ID it as a Pulmozyme neb. Then you paint nail polish over the scratchy writing and evidently it lasts longer because it's sort of embedded. I just can't figure out what to scratch with...I guess a nail.

Yeah I have 7 or 8 for Pulmozyme and double that for Tobi/albuterol/hs - the idea is I can go on a trip for a week and not have to worry about cleaning nebs. At home I clean nebs twice a week. For me this works that way I'm never using a wet neb which instantly makes my lungs gunky and I stick with the lengthy and germ killing procedure of washing the nebs with soap and water, and then sterilize them in hydrogen peroxide, then rinse them in sterile water which I make by boiling water for 15 min.

Oh and I have to date the nebs because since I am not just using one neb everyday for 6 months straight, I am assuming that mine last 2 years. That's a guess though.

Hopefully one day all our med's will be made as a powder inhale like the advair so we don't have to use nebs anymore but until then I'll do everything I can to not infect myself with my nebulizer.

Sonia,

If you get the SideStream Durable Nebulizer Cup they can be boiled.

They look like this

Thanks, Alyssa...
I actually have 2 of those, but don't have the compressor they're to be used with. I don't know if my compressor (proneb... old version) does 50 psi, which is required with these nebs. Thanks for the idea though. I did try them for awhile, but just don't know about my compressor.

Hi,

I see you all boil the neb about 10-15 minutes in destilated water... does anybody use Vaporisator for neb sterilization? I have bouhgt one last week, but I am not sure if the steam can sterilizate all parts of the neb...

I use Pari cups and I label them with a permanent pen on a piece of masking tape. P= Pulmozyme T= Tobi and X= Xopenax and H= Hypertonic. I rinse them out thoroughly after each use and boil them every so often. I do get new ones from my clinic every 3 months or so. I do use the TOBI cup for my Hypertonic. So when I am done with the TOBI month I am then on Hypertonic on my off TOBI months. I boil the cups in between to get out and TOBI or Hypertonic depending on which I am on.

I'm posting the question to PARI and hope they give us some answers as to the question of interchanging boiled nebs and how to safely mark them. If its necessary to mark them, PARI really should look into doing it for us in a permenant way. For example, they could make seperate nebs with letters into the material on each piece. I just get nervous using nail polish or something cause I worry when you boil, you could boil bits of it off into your water and maybe not do any favors for the neb's safety.... JMO though.

We'll see what PARI says.

I think I had a similar conversation with winace when he suggested the nail polish -- I said, wouldn't it be great if Pari could color code the nebs for the different drugs! How 'bout it Pari -- can we request colored nebs or at least different colored tops or something to differentiate between all the ones we use
