I and my family have made really major lifestyle changes to get the two members with CF well. My son basically is well and I am getting well. It's still a huge inconvenience to have CF. A few examples:
Going to most stores or the bank or other errands often means showering and washing clothes when we get back because they just aren't clean enough. Many stores make us so sick, we simply won't shop there. These include: Pier One Imports; Bombay Company; Bed, Bath and Beyond; and the local Sam's Club (though we liked Costco when we were in California, the Sam's Club here is vile).
I have major financial problems from pursuing alternative remedies, which aren't covered by insurance, state aid programs, charities, etc. It's all had to come out of my pocket and my pockets aren't deep. I don't think I have spoken with anyone with CF in the family who isn't under financial stress. Some people are under family-shattering levels of financial stress, on top of the chronic stress of caring for a sick loved one.
A lot of people with CF or caring for someone with CF are basically "shell-shocked" and war-weary. The battle with CF is relentless.
I hope that helps. Good luck with your assignment.
