Never a good sign

We've moved. We're trying to transfer M to the local CF center. They called to get him registered and for some reason, the new Peds didn't send any records, so I had to give a brief run-down of his case to them.

As I explained where we're transferring from, they are great, good, etc. I then told them where he started life. "He's originally from X--state."

The immediate response was a gasp and, "Oooohhhh. He's from X--state." phone removed from mouth and secretary informs NP where he started to hear the NP gasp in the background in dismay as well.

Wow, I have strong feelings about M's first CF center and lousy care. I never would have imagined that level of response based upon his entire state. That can't be a good thing.

Yikes! I've heard similar comments from people locally who've switched to the clinic in the City. Amazing the differences in quality of care between accreditted facilities.

Wow, if everyone is aware of the poor care, its truly unethical for the CF docs not to intervene. Isn't that part of what the accrediation process is all about? VERY frustrating!! I hope M gets great care at the new center.

When you look at the care center data on the cff site, there are a few centers that stand out for just how bad their statistics are. I mean, not just below average, but really bad. When they have access to the exact same treatments and therapies as the top centers, there is no reason for their numbers to be SO much worse than the rest; all patients deserve to be cared for by the same guidelines, get the testing they need, etc even if it's a 'small' clinic. So when they aren't- and you see by the numbers the majority of their patients aren't having clinic visits, sputum cultures and screenings for diabetes as they are supposed to, and then of course their pulmonary and digestive health is going to crash! What else do you expect to happen? Why are clinics like this allowed to keep their accreditation?!

I'm so sorry that M had to get his start at a place 'renowned' for it's bad care, whether it was due to it's stats or some other reason. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
