Does anyone take that antibiotic daily? Last I took my son to the doctor (a new one) she gave me info on it. At the time I thought "No thanks - he's doing good -why add another med - especially antibiotic if not sick". But maybe it is something to think about. any thoughts?

There is someone who takes it daily. Cant remember who, but thats only because they literally could not remember otherwise. Even with this new info on it....the original idea for it was for the antiinflammatory affects. IMHO I dont see it as a problem with resistance like some other meds that are being used solely for infections!

You've got to remember that its not only PA that's a big bug that effects CFers. THere's Cepacia too. I don't see why they wouldn't try finding a drug in that area as well. It would help a lot of people.</end quote></div>

of course! cepacia affects around 5-10% of the CF population (according to the latest CFF data) in the US. PA affects about tripple that.

and of course finding something for cepacia would be great.

but pouting on a thread that is meant to spread exciting news was inappropriate. and lecturing me about thinking before i speak is just arrogant and uncalled for.

OMFG Amy......I dont see how you could call Diane's post pouting! She made a statement that she wished that they could expand it to Cepacia. She put a "sigh" as in wishful thinking for the moment. She didnt get nasty or ridicule anyone about what progress they have made. Lecturing you might have been a bit off base, but your response to her was also off base. Remember like any posts that stirs emotions.....its all left up to interpretation & you seem to have taken completely different then others!

I just honestly don't think that she was pouting, and its a board - people are going to say things that you won't agree with. I didn't see anything disagreeable with what she said. And I can understand that you didn't like being lectured. I just don't want to see this turn into another he said/she said thing.

I'm from UK so maybe it's different regimes here.  However i
used to take 500mg Azithromycin three times a week.  I found
the 500mg made me feel sick and i forgot to take it with such an
odd regime.  Now i take 250mg everyday....much better, i don't
feel sick on it and i remember to take it - yay!

Our son has been on it since last October. He takes it once a day. His primary cf doctor has all his patients who are on it take it daily rather than mwf, etc.

I guess I thought this was really new. How long have you guys been taking it and do you think it has helped? I know one said that she doesn't culture PA anymore - that's great. My son only did Tobi once and since has cultured it but they said it isn't a "bad" strain or whatever. They didn't seem too worried anyway. And he has been doing great.

Amy babe, you gotta freakin chill out. Let's all chill out here!! Ok, everyone? Breathe...

When I read this post, to be honest? My 1st thought was-why can't this have an affect on cepacia? You know why this is different than your mutation thread comparison? Here it is: Cepacia is ALOT more dangerous than PA!! Ya, Pa can be bad, but we all know cepacia is more dangerous to catch.

Ames, you do take yourself way too seriously sometimes. Diane, you didn't mean anything by it but......ready?-I wish they had something for cepacia. Ta da. That's all.

Let's move on now. Back to the original post...

I think this is awesome news, and I personally have benefitted from using the Zithro for PA as I said before.

wanted to add-

I've been on Zithro for almost 2 years. Its had to have made a huge difference b/c its in these 2 years that my lung function has improved 45%. I take one pill 3x per week. They say that in cf patients the zithro acts as an anti-inflammatory. Maybe that's why?

Wow - 2 years! I had no idea that they have been using Zithro that long. That was the 1st time my son had seen that doc - so I was a little cautious. I guess my son has always just done albuterol treatments and the vest (now) so I just didn't know if we needed to add anything else.

Scarlett - I agree with you on the drama. I read here alot - but usually at work so don't post often. I just ignore all the fighting - I've always been one to just get along instead of fight about petty stuff! Life is too short! I'm surprised anons can post again - I just never took the time to sign up I guess.

Wow, good news. Thanks Amy. I wondered about my son who is 5 with cf and he has ben on zithromax for about 9 months now. On his refill it says to take for 7 months so at 7 months I called the doctor and asked what to do, they said wait till his next appointment. At his next appointment I asked the doctor and he told me he'll be on it forever. (he now takes every monday, wednesday and friday) It seems to agree with him
