Hey everyone. I've been reading on these forums for a while now and just now decided to make a forum name for myself. I like how if someone here has a problem they just ask and somebody else usually has some kind of answer for them, since we all kind of go through the same type of thing. Well anyway, I'm 21 and since I graduated from high school I've never gone back to school because my health has always gotten in the way. Just last year I was in the hospital five different times for atleast 2 weeks each time. I've been doing better and have not been in since this past December when I got out a day before my birthday. I want to go back to school but I have a few problems.
The school I want to attend is about an hour and 40 minutes away, so I'd have to move over there into an apartment since they have no dorms. I live with my parents right now and I get SSI every month. I don't know how I go about doing this. Do I just go find a place and move in, then report it so social security? Would they even help me out? I have no idea what I'm doing!

Hey!! Welcome to us. As for your problem... I'm not sure. But I started to get SSI when I was living in a school-leased apartment. And it didn't create any problems. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I would contact the your Caseworker and explain the situation. They would probably be able to help you locate something and assist in the expense.

HI & welcome,
I didn'get get SSI until I was an adult (like mid-late 20's) so I don't know about that. Like others said, call and ask them.

Also, just a thought, while you prepare to move and make changes in your life, you could do on-line classes to get some of them out of the way. I have a couple of friends (non CF) who do that and it works out well for them.

Take care!

Hi.
I had to stop working in my late 20's and qualified for SSDI. I was able to maintain my apt, my car...nothing was held against me and that was at the time that I was applying and had to list my assets. When I got married and we bought a home in a new town etc I never had the SSDI taken away nor did I have to report these new changes (though they knew I was married because my last name changed!). I just gave Social Security my new banking address because I do direct deposit...did it all automated over the phone and they continued sending my checks to my new town. No hassle or problems. They're pretty easy with that. You can do everything either by Internet or phone...don't even have to speak to a live person.

SSDI is different since its based on work history. SSI is based on income so changes could affect it.

Yeah, for now I'm getting the smaller classes out of the way by doing them online. It buys me time looking for a place and whatnot. I didn't know if since I'm on SSI I would have to look for a place under a certain amount in rent or what. I've tried contacting my CF counselor that I see when I go to clinic just to ask her if she knows about anything or recommends that I do anything, but she never really gets back to me. I guess I'll call up SS and ask them about this stuff. Thanks everyone.
