new liver and pancreas after double lung transplant

Physician confirmed he does have
cirrhosis caused by CF Liver disease and will need to be placed on a transplant list for a new liver and pancreas. On a scale of 6-40 his liver function was rated 18. He says it's not until it reaches 25. Anyone else gone through this? I'm new here but my nephew had a double lung transplant last year (May) and has been doing well until April of this year. He is 30 and had CF as a child. I'm very concerned but feel he did not get the gift of two wonderful lungs to be taken away by a dying liver. Please pray for him. Also do you think he should have had the liver at the same time as the double lung transplant? The doctors are not on the same page with that one.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your nephew and that he is having to deal with the issue of transplant all over again.

I have had a double lung transplant - as of May of this year - but I have not had to deal with CF related Liver Disease.

As for whether or not I think he should have gotten both his double lung and liver transplant at the same time. I think it depends on the situation. If there was no real indication that he was going to have liver problems at the time of his double lung transplant I think it would be foolish to transplant an organ that was showing no signs of needing to be replaced. That being said if he was having issues at the time and it was already a problem then maybe it is something that should have been considered. It is easy to look back in hindsight and say yes he should have had them both done at the same time - because NOW you know he is needing to go through this process again for his liver.

The key is to just rest assured that at the time of his lung transplant the best decision possible was made given the information at hand. Try not to debate the what ifs, could haves and should haves - it will just cause unnecessary stress.

Best of Luck to your nephew and I hope that his wait is not long for his liver and that he is able to enjoy more time with those new lungs!

Take Care,
Lindsey
