new port...how long is it supposed to hurt?

I just had my first port placed last Thursday. I went into it not really knowing what to expect, as far as recovery. It was accessed the very next day (from what I understand, it isn't supposed to be accessed until a week after, but my docs didn't want me lying around the hospital just for that.) I seems to be healing just fine, but I'm just wondering how long I can expect it to be sore. It was placed in my chest and threaded through my jugular. I drove for the first time this morning and decided it wasn't a good idea because I couldn't turn my head all the way to look behind me. I can't make any sudden movements, and coughing is killing me! Is this something I should get used to since the port will always be there, or will I eventually not be able to feel it at all?

When I had mine placed in my chest both times I was sort for about a week and a half. Your mobility in the affected areas and soreness will get better gradually. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless there is a lot of unusual swelling, redness, or if it is warm to touch (infected). Good luck...

I am a slow healer, and I honestly think it was about a month before I felt COMPLETELY normal again. After about two weeks it wasn't as painful though. I know it totally sucks, but after a couple of months it'll be a distant memory. My only suggestion for now is either have your doc prescribe some mild painkillers or just stay on advil round the clock for a few days. good luck!
