I'd have to agree that a cure would rake in big bucks for drug companies... and, what wonderful PR for those who DO develop it! I mean, what about the dude who discovered peniscilin (sorry, I blank on his name, cause its late... lol)
Anyway, I also think that it is misleading to say that all big pharma co.'s only want to make money and don't really care about curing or helping. I think Amy makes an excellent point.
I also am optimistic about ANY new drug they come up with (be it Vertex, which was the point of the thread or anything else).... I too have been disappointed in the past (by TOBI, for one) by all the promises of "miracle drugs", but I keep a healthy and rational optimism. I do not expect it to "cure" me, but I pray it can "help" me. If its doesn't, I continue to hope and pray something will, but if it does, how wonderful that would be! I must admit, I don't get as excited as I did many years ago when I too was lured by promises of erradicating CF by the time I'm in my 20's (I'm 28)... I have been too disappointed when I believe in such things. But, I do still have hope, and, much like when hypertonic came out, I am excited and pray it works for others and myself. I don't "expect" it to, but wouldn't I be pleasantly surprised if it did?!?! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
