Hi Ginger,

Since you mentioned showing mycobacterium abcessus in a bronch when you were 16, I would absolutely look into that further.

I have mycobacterium avium (different type then yours) and it caused me a 50% drop in fev1. Things now are under control but it took a while to figure out that that's what it was bringing me down, which along the way left me lower then I'd like to be. If that is the culprit you'll want to know sooner then later so you can get on top of it and start the right meds.

That's interesting that it showed in your bronch but not the sputum cultures. I'd def do the sputum (and that takes 4-6 weeks to see results for mycos) and look into the bronch if need be. I don't know but I'd demand some tests to start figuring the drop in fev1.

Good luck! I do hope you figure this out and hopefully it's not the myco acting up and you can gain back what you've lost <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

yeah i was in a similiar position as you not so long ago.I went into hospital with a fev1 of around 63 then while in hospital and on ivs it dropped to around 50.After a week of intensive ivs it went up aagain to fev1 79 ,now its around 65,
hopefully the ivs should kick in soon and bring ya lung function back up ie sometimes it takes a while for the drugs to have their effects

Hi Ginger, Welcome to the forum. I too had a significant drop a few years ago. It was due to myco.avium.complex (MAC). We were able to eradicate it with 18 months of treatment using 3 ABX (oral). My PFTs have gone back up, but not all the way unfortunately. Keep asking questions. We all learn and benefit from them! ~Juliet
