Nose Bleeds

Okay I wanted to post this because I can't remember where I saw the post or read about this on here, but I know I did. Also I think Jane posted about her sons having nose bleeds as well and I thought of her when my doc said this yesterday.

I was at the allergist and mentioned that I had been having nose bleeds the past week - mainly just when I blow my nose - no blood gushing out or anything. I did not tell my other doc but I have stopped my nose spray (I am on Flonase) I stopped the nose spray when the bleeds started and got a saline spray to use to put some moisture back.

Well point being in case anyone has exsperience with nose bleeds and is unaware of this - you are supposed to STOP any medicated nose spray (Flonase, Nasacort, Rhinocort ....) if you are experiencing nose bleeds. The doc said to stop using the nose spray and stick with saline until the nose bleeds go away (like a few days or however long it takes) and then you can start the nose spray again.

Also I thought you were supposed to aim the spray straight up your nose but the doc told me yesterday that you are supposed to aim the tip slightly to the outside of the nostril - AWAY from the septum (middle of the nose).

I just wanted to share that because I know this nose bleed thing has driven me crazy the past week - week and a half and I would hate for someone else to be going through it too and not realize that the med. sprays can make the problem worse by drying the nose out or what have you.

Again just wanted to share what the doc advised I do for my nose bleeds - try it if you would like if not that is fine too.

Oh yes. Alcohol.

This is why you're having a nose bleed.

Switch to Nasacort AQ because it contains no alcohol. As a bonus it has no taste or smell unlike Flonase.

You will be much happier.

I used to suffer from nose bleeds all the time from Flonase and I had no idea there were other options out there. I thought nose bleeds were part of the deal with nose sprays.

They're not.

Hit your doctor over the head. He is mis-informing you.

Especially with your newly diagnosed allergies, an intranasal steroid is going to be an important part of treating your allergies. And treated allergies, as you will find out with your allergy encasings, can dramically improve lung function.

Go to www.nasacort.com and print out a coupon. Take it to your doc and say that this drug is equally as effective as Flonase in two head to head studies published in peer reviewed journals, even in patients with the most severe symptoms, but nasacort aq unlike flonase lacks alcohol. Therefore epistaxis levels with nasacort aq are drastically reduce.

Then hit him over the head.

Thanks for the info. I knew Flonase had alcohol,but I was not aware that others did not. I have tried every other nose spray I can think of and I end up with nosebleeds with every one that I have tried. The one I tried before Flonase was the NasacortAQ actually and for whatever reason nosebleeds started very quickly with that by what I can recall I only took it for about a month and was having issues so I stopped it. I don't know why - it may be operator error or something - I may be nose spray inept lol I don't know. I actually like the Flonase and haven't had any problems with up until the past week and I have been on it for 6 months now. I think it was a combination ofall the other meds I have been on this past month - all the aerosols, the antibiotics and so on and I also started taking the advair twice a day as prescribed vs. once like I had been using it (and a side effect from that I read can be nosebleeds as well - who knows).

As for hitting my doc on the head, the doc that prescribed the Flonase originally I no longer see lol so that is a moot point. The doc that told me about the Flonase and that I need to stop using it til the bleeds stop was the allergist and he just saw me for the 2nd time yesterday.

Well I am off to go searching for allergen proof mattress and pillow covers (woohoo my fun filled afternoon lol).

Thanks for the info Amy - will wait and see what happens once the nose bleeds stop and maybe see how things progess - like I said I have tried others as well and have problems with all of them. If not for that I would be more eager to get off the Flonase immediately and switch to something else. I just don't know what else I would try that I haven't already tried.

I do not recall the exact problems I had with Rhinocort as I haven't taken it in over 6 years. I just know I had an issue with it that prompted my doc to change me from Rhinocort to another spray at the time.

careful with rhinocort. it's the weakest intra nasal steroid out there.

often times people need to titrate up to 4 squirts in each nostril once a day for full effect. this will make the script run out sooner.

flonase, nasonex and nasacort AQ only require 2 squirts in each notril and nasacort AQ can be titrated down to 1 suirt per notril after 2 weeks of use (which will double the Rx period).
