Have you by any chance noticed a different odor when you are growing aspergillus? Thinking back, Andrew has for about two weeks had a different odor to his breath. You know when you are ill with strep throat or a bad cold and you can kind of "smell" the infection? Well, I thought Andrew was coming down with strep, but his breath has more of a sour smell to it. More sour than bad breath from the typical cold. Just wondering if that could be a sign of the aspergillus growing. I'll mention it to his doctor on Wednesday when we reevaluate.
We are on day 2 of the prednisone...three more days to go. Still no change. Maybe he is just supposed to cough. Am I making too much out of this? He's 9 after all. By this time should we just expect a cough and more mucus production?

Hi Tonya,

Does your son culture staph or psuedo?

Because Kj has cultured both and on the odd occasion her room in the mornings after she has been asleep can have a sour smell.

I think it can mean that an infection is brewing in her lungs when that happens (not sure though lol)

Though as she may have aspergillus too, and I don't know how long she has had it, it could be that?

Kj's staph and psuedo have been eradicated atm 5 clear cultures <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

So we will see if the sour smell appears again.

Has your son had IGE levels done?

I am thinking about asking the docs to do this on kj as well, because she has had a 20% drop in lung function since january this year. I'm wondering it the aspergillus has caused that?

On the cough and more mucous production, Have they done any cultures on his sputum, maybe up his exercise and physio and see if that helps <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Kj at the age of nine didn't cough much and when she did they always put her in hospital for a tune up.

Andrew hasn't cultured pseudomonas since he was a toddler. He is currently culturing staph, in fact that is what they have been treating him for with orals for a good part of the summer. I did not know he was growing aspergillus until I was talking with his clinic again a week ago and they mentioned that his last culture showed it. I think now they are wondering if it's the aspergillus causing the cough instead of the staph. I don't know, I'm very confused. His lung function is awesome..at least it still was a month ago when we last had pfts done. So I can't say he is "sick", but he is definitely not been himself since I'd say May or June. For this reason, I don't know if I should push having his allergy level tested, etc. because I don't want to sound like I'm making more of this than there is. But deep down I just feel like there is more going on and I don't want it to become a problem.

I am very interested to hear what you find out about your daughter. Please keep me posted on her results. I am thinking about her and hoping her aspergillus is not too advanced and can be easily "subdued"!

Thanks,
Tonya

I have decided that I am going to push for IGE levels to be done if he doesn't mention it. I think that as mums we need to push against the barriers for our kids, because if we don't who will? lol.

Kj had grown staph since she was about 7 years old, she cultured it every sputum sample for years. We thought it was unbeatable and it really damaged her upper right lung.

This year when she cultured psuedo as well she was put on a eradication regime to get rid of that, the added bonus was that her staph seems to have gone as well.

She had never had a sputum sample that didn't culture staph. After 5 culture (all clear, only normal flora)
She seems to be clear of it (fingers crossed)

She was put on meropenem and Tobramycin Iv's, plus she was on bactrim (orally)

Out of hospital she was on inhaled tobramycin, bactrim fulltime and ciproxin month on month off. I also had her on high dose garlic which is supposed to help the tobramycin work better.

I am saying this as we was told the staph was unbeatable, maybe we were just lucky but adding meropenem into the drug mix really worked for us!

I will let you know on Kj's prognosis when I get the results back.

Take care <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
