Oddball question...viscosity

Okay...because I'm still "new" to the CF community, I would appreciate info regarding nasal drainage and viscosity. Because secretions are thickened in CF lungs, is it safe to assume that nasal secretions are thickened also? I ask this because Ellie has a bit of a runny nose, but it appears like a "normal" runny nose (i.e., not thickened). If nasal secretions aren't thickened in a CF person, is there a correlation with how thick secretions in the lungs may or may not be? I've read of sinus issues and CF and wondered if runny noses are visibly different in these individuals. Yep...another strange question from me, perhaps!

Not strange at all. It's so important to ask these questions when they cross your mind - education is power in making sure your Ellie gets the best care she needs.

My boogers are pretty thick when I have sinus issues. that being said, when I'm having allergies, they're super watery. Like water from the tap. When I have a cold, it's somewhere in between.

Hope that answers your question....

My kids very rarely had runny noses when they were small. Much less than it seems the average kid. The drainage though did appear normal when they had it. While they never had any sinus problems, CAT scans this past year showed a lot of sinus disease. My son had surgery. But I think almost all of cfers have sinus disease even when they don't seem to have problems. Not sure if we should have gone through with his sinus surgery.
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 7 and Jack, 5 both with cf

By the way, how did you link your facebook picture? Ellie is precious.

Until DS was 2 1/2 years old and we started pulmozyme, I had never, ever seen his nose run and was amazed. His nasal boogies are usually pretty thick, when he was a baby and was congested, it was a struggle to try and suck them out with the booger sucker.

Now that he's older, he has gotten a few head colds and his nose runs, usually it's clear and thin. When he has sinus issues it's usually a lot thicker.
