Actually, fungus (which is what thrush is...it is a yeast called Candida) can became resistant just like a bacteria. Most thrush is sensitive to the mycelex troche (which you suck on) and the Nystatin (which is the liquid that you swish and swallow.)
If these treatments are not followed correctly and/or your thrush does not go away, diflucan is the next line of defense. Diflucan (fluconazole) is absored in the gut and filtered in the liver and can sometimes cause liver problems. Next comes v-fend (voraconozole) which causes liver problems and sight disturbances. I was on this after I did not treat a yeast infection for a few years.....I had Candida in my bloodstream and it was actually very serious.
To keep from getting yeast/fungus again, I NEVER miss my probiotic. Since 2003, I have not struggled with yeast.
You need to be as vigilant in taking anti-fungal meds as with any other type of medication fighting a bacteria. It can become very resistant quite quickly and there are very few anti-fungals and most are quite toxic with some serious side effects.
And, just for your info, thrush can cause some pretty icky things ranging from asthma to sinus issues to reactive airway disease if it is not kept in check.
