okay i have had a recent drop in my lung function recently my fev1 went from 84% in april 2006 to 73% in april 2007 iam wondering if this can be reversed ie will i ever get back up to the 80s again i heard though that lung damage is irreversable so once damaged lung tissue can not be mended

IF the cause is from damage then NO you can not get that back. IF its from inflammation, mucous etc then you should be able to get most if not all back. My PFTs are like yo yo's, but I will say that with each dip I take its harder to get back and over time the highest # gets lower. Much of that is just age & progression. But in a short term you have a chance if no damage has been done.

I agree with Melissa, she is right on. Do you use hypertonic saline? If not ask for it cause that stuff helped me go from 65% to 90% in a year. HS doesnt work for everyone but its worth a shot if you want the number to go up. Just a suggestion.

Hi Ricky123,

From my experience, my FEV1 was like 39% forever, well I started to exercise and it went to 59%. So that was my experience. I had to work my butt off but it worked for me. Might be worth a try, exercise is great for everyone, espeically CF'ers. (I go the gym 3x a week and that was about 6 wks when I had those results).

Hope your numbers go back to where you want them!

What actions did you take to prevent the slip in FEV1?

Do you go to clinic every 3 months, and do PFT's every time you're there?

The key is to treat a slip in FEV1 immediately, so that permanent damage is limited.

But remember - people die of this disease because it's not easy to get back lung function. If it was easy to improve FEV1's, we wouldn't be hearing about Tx all the time and death.
