Last night I laid out the things for Jesse's last ceftaz dose and went to bed. (My hub does the dose @ 10 and I do the 6am dose).

I was sound asleep when he came running in IN A PANIC telling me he had grabbed the wrong med and all of it had infused! It was tobra- not ceftaz!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0">

I had already given Jesse his tobra at 6:30 (once a day), so it was another dose only 4 hours later. I called the home care pharmacist who called the doctor on call. They said he was ok but he needed to drink lots of water to flush his kidneys. ALso, call them if he gets ringing in his ears.

Luckily he was fine, but poor hub stayed up all night by his bed watching.

I wanted to be mad but it was a mistake and he feels terrible. The pharmacist said it happens all the time, but it won't happen again here!

Oh no! Glad he is okay! We all make mistakes, especially when there are 2 caregivers trying to do their best!
We had a similar incident, but with about 2-3 nebs (can't remember). I had done them extra early on our infant before work. Told Dad TWICE that I did them, just to make sure he heard me (since I know alot goes in one ear and out the other!). Well, anyways...I came home at lunch to find all the empty neb containers laying on the counter...I asked "did you do her nebs?". He said YES! UGH! They were about 4-5 hours apart. I really gave it to him for not listening! lol
Hopefully it doesn't happen again!

ahh,

mistakes do happen and consider the ratio of how often we cf'ers are on ivs or home ivs dooing everything ourselves and most normal mistakes made, I think we are doing good.

The sad thing is, this happens probably even MORE in hospitals, and now you all will be extra aware again... I know myself I get complacent and comfortable with home ivs and can sometimes lose my diligence and/or standards (hmm, those arent the right words I dont think ha) but what I mean is, I get comfortable too which happens, its hard not to be when we do it day in and day out...

anywyas, I wold be stressed I know too, but I wouldnt let it beat anyone down, including your husband!

Good luck though and hope everything goes more smoothly from now on <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Oh Jane,
I'm glad everything is okay. It sounds like you knew all the things to do. I'm glad you have someone that can help you. Poor hubby, I'm hope he got some sleep. You guys are so great. The boys are so lucky and blessed they have parents that take such good care of them.

My heart always,,,,karla <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
