Oral antibiotics

Hi all,

when you feel that you are getting a bit sick, how quick do you start to take oral antibiotics?

I am feeling a bit poorly, I have pain in my back (lungs) my throat feels swollen, and my limbs hurt a bit. Shoud I start on oral antibiotics? My doctor tells me that if I have "ugly mucus" I should start, but so far, I don't have that much of it. And I don't want to get imune to the antibiotics either.

What do you think?

Have you been doing extra airway clearance to see if that helps? We always do a couple days of aggressive treatment that way (increased nebs, including one she only does when sick, doubled vest treatments, saline sinus rinses) and see if that helps things before going on to abx with Emily. They do want to know right away if she has more serious symptoms like high fever or very significant lethargy.

However I am sure it would also vary based on what bugs you are colonized and how quickly they tend to get out of hand when you are sick...

I always agonize over this question myself. I agree with amping up the treatments to see if that helps. All my problems begin with sinus and ears. At CF clinic Tuesday, my eardrum was red. Yesterday, some pain in the jaw. I always think, well it could be allergies. I do lots and lots of sinus rinses all the time. Got up this morning and WHAM -- ear is worse and sinuses are joining in. So I started Avelox.

In my experience, letting an infection get a toe-hold is nothing but bad news. I'm going to see the ENT tomorrow. I wish they would invent an otoscope that allows you to look inside your own ear!! There have been times that I can feel this going on before they can see it. So I end up having to go back to Dr. the next week, when I have "proof" such as pus in the ears or nose.

Have you had back pain like this before?

Hi, yes I have had it before; the lung pain was like my first step towards getting diagnosed. I have started on antibiotics now, I feel generaly ok, I don't have fever, and my head is "clear". Funny you shuld mention the ear thing, becuase I have ear ache now, which I often have during sinus infection, and the jawn thing too. My throat is kind of soar and my ear hurts. But my sinuses don't hurt, not more than "noraml" <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">)
