oral meds for treating pseudomonas

Has anyone taken oral Dicloxacillin or oral Geocillin (carbenicillin) to treat pseudomonas? If so have you had good results using it?

Hi there,

I take Dicloxacillin all the time, I'm not sure about the other one you mentioned.

To cut a long story short, Dicloxacillin is NOT for pseudomonas, it's effective against bacteria such as Staph Aureus (assuming the Staph is sensitive to the penicillins ie not MRSA).

Maybe your doc prescribed the Dicloxacillin for Staph, maybe you have cultured both Staph and pseudomonas (very common for CF) and he didn't mention it to you.

Pseudo (the pseudo that usually resides in CF lungs that is) is difficult to treat by oral antibiotics, the most effective oral med is Ciprofloxacin (Cipro), the others being IV or in inhaled forms such as Tobi or even Piperacillin. I'd have a word to your doctor to check and discuss your treatment.

Good luck

i take cipro and rifampicin <sp> for pseudonomas. Rifampacin apparently synergises the effect of cipro even if it does make your pee and tears orange! However oral antibiotics hardly work for me anymore and so i go for IV's now

Hi there,
I am currently on Dicloxicillin for Staph, but as to what works best for you it all depends on your cultures and your sensitivities. Each person is different with their culture results I have taken Cipro in the past for Psuedo but at present the psuedo I grow is resistant to Cipro, but not Levaquin (which many people on here say is not as effective against Psuedo).
It really all depends on your cultures, if the Psuedo you are growing is sensitive to Dicloxicillin then it is sensitive to it. I hope that it works I haven't finished my stint on diclox to know how it works for me with the staph - this is the first time I have taken it I probably won't be done with the full regimen until 2 weeks from now and by then you will probably know for yourself lol.
As of now it is working fine for me. No real side effects that I can tell.

Hi this is the original poster again. My cultures show nonmucoid pseudo and that it should be sensitive to Tobi and Cipro however I still dont show a clean culture after using them. But I also cant seem to finish the recommended treatment course of 3 months because of terrible side effects. I however did Iv Tobi and Merepemiun for two weeks and my cultures were negative for six months but now the nonmucoid is showing up again. So the thought is do I just try to maintain it or still try for erradicating it. I am 19 years old and have never cultured anything until about a year and a half ago.

Wow is all I can say to you having not cultured anything until a yr an a half ago. That is very impressive. My personal opinion on erradicating bacteria is if you can great, but don't be too disappointed if you can't. It is very difficult to completely erradicate any bacteria we grow because they mucus we produce is so thick and tends to stick in our lungs.
I would try staying on the meds though they should help at least a little
