Oral Thrush-Need help!

About 10 years ago I had my first case of oral thrush. At that point, I didn't know about acidophilous. Someone told me about it and I started taking it. That took care of my thrush and I didn't have it again for 10 years.
However-thist past September I had para-influenza and was on prednisone, antibiotics, and my normal advair. I got a bad case of thrush again even though I was taking a ton of acidophilous as well.
Since then-I have had it at least 4 times, and now I am coming down with it again! My acidophilous count is the highest I can get (10-20 billion) and I keep getting it! GRRR! I have been on diflucan 4 times (and it always makes it go away)...now they are having me try Mycelex Troche's (you suck on them) because I have it again. I was on diflucan for 10 days one of the times just to make sure I got rid of it. Apparently it's back!
Does anyone have any other ways to treat thrush?? I am drinking Kefir as well-that hasn't helped.

Hi Marci,

I have been on Advair for years, but I am one of the lucky people who is causes chronic thrush. I have to take Nystatin daily to keep it at bay. And I know that can be standard treatment for people that have thrush all the time. But hopefully that's not the case with you. Good luck

I have bad cases of oral thrush in the mouth. Pulmicort inhaler (an oral steroid) & Atrovent & Ventolin are the reasons for this thrush...and i believe Azirthromycin can cause this too b/c it's antibiotic. In fact I have to bump up my oral thrush meds b/c of Azithromycin.

I find what helps me with oral thrush is Nilstat (liquid form) and making sure I wash out my mouth with water straight after each use of my inhaled medications. Gargling also helps too.

Another thing that I find useful is to lessen dairy products, especially cheese as these can increase thrush. Sugar should also be avoided as it help feeds thrush...so i tend to stay away or lessen the amount of these foods/

Hope this helps...all the best with finding solution to your problem.

I haven't tried the nystatin swish and swallow-I will ask my doctor if I can keep some of that on hand. I will start Mycelex tonight (I am scared about starting new meds when my husband isn't home-I have had 2 bad allergic reactions and they scared me!)....hopefully that will help. I do have to take those 5 times a day though-which is a lot! At my next clinic about the Nystatin....I think I might look into taking it as a preventative measure like you do Leah.....since I have had it so many times lately!
I do make sure I wash my mouth out with water every time I take my advair...and I have been on advair for about 5 years and didnt' start getting the thrush until just this past September. I think it was everything I was on then, combined with the fact that I was sick (immune system down) that made me get the thrush-and now it is not totally going away!
I am going to try eating less sugar-but that is hard! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
