Organ Donation

My mom and I were talking about organ donation (thanks to Amy's thread) and she told me that she was not going to be an organ donor because of her age. (She is 66). She thinks that when she dies, all of her organs are too old to be of any use to anyone.

Is this true?

HOG WASH....

There is so much of the body that is valuable that we dont even think of besides the obvious hearts, lungs, kidneys etc.

I have known older people to give their eyes (even if there is some type of problem with the eye....depending on the recipents needs they could still be used), skin etc.

Age has NOTHING to do with donating in general. Granted certain things might not be as viable, but that doesnt mean other things arent!

Myth. I'm too old to donate. Nobody would want my organs.

Reality. There's no defined cutoff age for donating organs. Organs have been successfully transplanted from donors in their 70s and 80s. The decision to use your organs is based on strict medical criteria, not age. Don't disqualify yourself prematurely. Let the doctors decide at your time of death whether your organs and tissues are suitable for transplantation.
