Oxygen ..

For those of you on Oxygen or that have used oxygen in the past when did you start using it? What were your O2 Sats? How did using it start - meaning just at night, with exercise or activity, or did you just start immediately with using it all the time?

Thanks a bunch - just my curious mind at work.

Happy Holidays,
Lindsey

Lindsey,

Only a doctor can prescribe oxygen and they would test you. Both at rest and when doing a walk.

I started at night first, as we desaturate at night while sleeping first. Then working out was added, then all the time.

Good luck

I started using oxygen about a year before my transplant. I began only using it at night because I was desaturating. Then I started to use it for exercise. And then eventually (about close to two months pre transplant) I began using it all the time. I was still stubborn up until the last day though about using it out of the house. So really, I used it while I was in the house/car or whatever. but as soon as I was in a public place i took it off. Probably not the best move, but as I said, I'm stubborn.

Are you nearing that? Or just thinking for the future?

I started oxygen after my last bout with pneumonia. While asleep in the hospital one night my O2 had dropped around 80. It kept doing that every night. Before discharging I had to walk around for a while with an E size tank to see if helped.....it did. After a few weeks my oxygen went back to normal levels once everything was under control (<i>94 is good for me)</i> so I now use it on 2.5 whenever i feel I need it. Still don't use it at night unless I'm feeling real bad. Can't bring myself to use it in public.....too shy about that stuff<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Thanks guys.

I am just really curious. I don't know if I am nearing that or not. I probably am, but am trying to convince myself I am not.

When I went to my appointment on Monday my O2 sats were at 90 when I was first hooked to the machine then when I was walking they rose to about 92-93. I had to switch fingers from my left to right hand and when I switched hands the reading went down to 89 and then rose a bit to 91.

The transplant doc told me that I am teetering on the edge. My normal is between 92-94 and has been for the past year. Occasionally I will get a reading of 96 but it is very sporadic.

I was pretty much just wanting to get an idea. Being on oxygen scares me more than most things and I am not really sure why. I think it is just that it is another OBVIOUS reminder that I am sick, but then again everything else I deal with now scared me at first too. When you need things it can change your perception of them.

Happy Holidays,
Lindsey
