pain during cpt

Good morning,
My son (10 yrs old) has been home from the hospital since Tuesday night. He has a picc in and has been hesitant about using his vest. It's a mental thing. For some reason he thinks the vest is going to jar his picc out of place. So, we have been doing manual CPT and Flutter for his airway clearance. Before we went in the hospital, he was complaining during CPT that his upper left side hurt. I thought maybe he had a plug or something. Now, he writhes in pain while I do his cpt..regardless of where I am doing it. He says it hurts on the inside and the outside. My question is this...Is he telling me the truth, or is he overreacting to the discomfort in hopes of shortening his therapy time?

We did not have an xray in the hospital, so I'm not sure if he has plugs or not, but he has been on his iv meds for a little over a week now and his pfts are coming up. So, that leads me to believe his lungs are clearing up. I don't want to be heartless about his pain, but as the caregiver, I have to do it. It's for his own good. Any thoughts?

I can't tell you if your son is really in pain or not. But I can suggest you take him to the doctor to diagnose the pain. I'm willing to bet, if he's making it up, he won't want to go on the extra trip to the ER. But if it's real, maybe there is something at the hospital they can do to diagnose it.

I guess it could be several things- I'll just throw out what issues I've had, and say that you might want to call his doctor and let them know what is going on if you haven't already .

It could be that he is just sore from being "beat". I hate manual cpt- I am so sore by the 2nd or 3rd day! I take my vest to the hospital with me now and use it all the time, both at the hospital and at home- with my picc in.

It could also be the IV meds he's on making him achey. Maybe you could convince him to try his vest on the lowest numbers you can set it on to ease him into it/build up his confidence in using it with his picc?

That's about all I've got, sorry! I've had some pleurisy issues that have caused bad, localized pain, but other than that, I wouldn't know. I hope he gets feeling better soon!

Hey Tonya,

There is no way to know if he is making up the pain. However, it is quite possible for cystics to have pain in or around their lungs. Unfortunatley, if the pain is caused from infection or a plug, the answer is to do MORE therapy!

I have never had pain "all over" my lungs, though. It is usually in one spot or area at a time. I mean, I can see getting achy from meds, or from plain not feeling well. But I can't see having BAD pain all over just your lung area.

Hope this helps.
