"Evil Beast" indeed!
Oh man....it's pure misery!
I've had it on three occasions. First episode was years ago. I'd been admitted to the hospital after contracting the flu. I got a nasty lung infection and went in for iv's. They gave me some oxygen and started antibiotics and I felt so much better. After a couple days on iv antibiotics though, I developed pancreatitis. The dr. on call at the time (my doc went out of town) said no way would the meds cause it. I never believed him. I came out feeling so much worse than when I went in!
Then last year I began a month long dose of cipro (which I'd taken on & off for years). Two weeks into it I developed pancreatitis. The pain was just like the first episode...awful. I stayed in bed and only drank water and took pain meds till it passed.
My last episode also occurred about 2 weeks into a month long dose of oral antibiotics. This time it wasn't cipro, but a combo of rifampin and another med I can't recall right now.
My body just seems to have changed and isnt' tolerating the oral meds much. I'm allergic to penicillins & sulfa drugs & with these reactions, I'm really limited by the oral meds I can tolerate. I'm finishing my first round of tobi this week and so far haven't had any problems with it (Thank God). I don't want to do iv's every time I need an antibiotic, but if tobi doesn't work for me, that'll be my only option.
Interesting article mom2lillian, I had never heard the relations between pancreatitis & mild cases either. I do drink occasionally (mostly wine), but didn't have any on these occasions.
I'm not sure about the crfd connection. Diabetes runs rampant in my mom's family. I try to stay pretty low carb with my diet and on the last occasion, I had really "splurged" and had too much sugar along with the meds. I probably put my pancreas into overdrive with the combo.?
I just pray I never get it again (or any of you!)!!
