Para Influenza

Went to the CF doctor yesterday because of problems I have been having....I have been sick for about 1.5 weeks, chest has been super tight, no voice, etc.

My PFT's were as high as my lsat appt (woohoo!) - I really thought they would be down a lot because it has been so hard to breath.

So-he diagnosed me with para influenza-which is the same virus that causes croup in babies. Fun! I have been running a low grade fever (around 100-101) and have been feeling miserable!

I am finishing out my Tobi he had me on for 2 weeks, and tapering down my course of prednisone. I am glad to see its not really CF related...but just need to watch myself to make sure it doesn't turn into a lung infection. I was beginning to get worried because none of my meds were working (makes sense now!) and my lungs have been so tight. My doctor says the virus is irritating my lungs. My oxygen level was 98% - so that was good as well.

I'm so sorry you have this- Emily had a nasty bout of it not long ago and it made her really miserable. She needed high dose prednisone to keep her airways open and like you, had a low grade fever for a long time. Unfortunately, she developed pneumonia and in her case, it was the sickest she's been in a long time. I hope you are feeling better very soon! <img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">

My doctor diagnosed it just by my symptoms, etc. I think you can do a swab but he didn't do that.

I was feeling better last night-now feeling worse this morning. I think a big part of it is because I haven't been able to sleep well in about 2 weeks, from the coughing as well as the prednisone.

Sorry to hear your daughter had it-and that she got a secondary infection from it. That is what I am worried about-I have to call the doctor on Monday if I am not better. It has just taken a LONG time to get over this.

I am hoping the prednisone I am on and finishing up the Tobi will help keep it from settling into my lungs. I am going to try and go back to sleep now while the kids are at school to help catch up-hoping that will help. I am also going to take Nyquil tonight (doctor ok'd it) in order to help me sleep. Last night I went to bed at 11pm, was up from 12:30am-3am, and then was up for the day at 6:30am. That is not nearly enough sleep for me...and it has been like this for 2 weeks. No wonder I'm not getting any better!

Her drs went by the symptoms, time of year she was sick and the fact that there were a bunch of other cases in her school to dx her initially. It was confirmed at the hospital when we had to take her in for the pneumonia when they did other tests.

I agree- you need some SLEEP to recover. I hope you are able to nap and that the nyquil helps you get more sleep the next few nights. That's what I hate about prednisone- Emily NEEDS it for the severe inflammation she is prone to with exacerbations, but it really messes up her sleep! Hang in there... hope the weekend brings improvement.

Thanks-I am really hoping the weekend brings improvement as well. I have my Nyquil ready to go-am taking it in about a 1/2 hour. A full nights sleep at this point would pretty much be a miracle. I think the lack of sleep is really hindering my getting well process.

I hear you on the prednisone-it is fairly new to me, and so far I have a love/hate relationship with it!

Luckily I am tapering down and am on 20mg tonight and twice tomorrow, then 15 mg twice a day for 2 days, then 15mg once a day for 2 days-then DONE!

I am supposed to be heading out of town for a litlte vacation with family on Wednesday-so I really hope I am back to normal by then!
