participating in a study

ok, so I just went to the doc today (PFTs hit an 18% increase since my last visit! wooooo!) and he suggested that I participate in a study being done to see the effects of simvastatin (sp?), which is already FDA approved and marketed for lowering cholesterol, in cf patients. It's been shown to reduce inflammation and strengthen bones in those that have taken it for cholesterol...it's also been used in treating colon cancer (again, for the inflammation). I was just wondering if anyone has done this or knows any more about it. I should be starting in june...hopefully I'll become less inflamed!

ps. it pays $200, so I just couldn't pass it up!!

Statins are miracle drugs, in my opinion. And I think this is just the tip of the iceburg for what they can do to the human body.

Simvastatin, better known as Zocor, is a member of the statin group that is FDA approved to lower cholesterol.

The CFF website has been talking about clinical trials with Zocor for a while - but I haven't heard of a person participating as of yet. This is great news!

Similar to Zithromax - Zocor will be used off-label for CF patients.

Just beware - as I'm sure your doc already is (but by some things I read on this website, I wonder) - statins interact with many medications. So just make sure that you aren't on any meds that interact with statins (read the Zocor PI).

Keep us posted on how the trial goes! I'm very interested!
