pft curve

I'm talking about the pictoral blow you perform during your pft. The reason I ask is because since 2001/02ish I initially start out very high and have this immediate drop off (marked with a ?), cliff dive if you will, and then a steady decline until it bottoms out. The doctor commented that by my inhale (the part of the diagram below the line) being nicely rounded (marked with a ) that he doesn't think I should have this cliff dive and that I should be in turn expending more air longer during the test which at the very least will improve my FVC test results. I would like to have an accurate test of my lungs ~ I get frustrated with the inaccuracy of the pft. I will draw a sketch of my results to give you a better idea of what I am talking about. Okay here it is...don't make fun of it i hope it explains what I'm talking about. Yeh, I know I could have scanned it in but this was easier at this moment.

Please let me know if you have this dip and if a doctor has ever explained why and/or if you have any suggestions of how to get this dip out.

I think it might be an obstruction? Or the way you blow out? Is your airway always open when you do it or do you tend to clench up? It's important to stay relaxed, and use your stomach when blowing out, cause if you strain yourself too much, and close your throat a bit, it can actually make your numbers lower.

Ya when you were blowing out, there was a pause or a disruption in the air flowing out of your lungs. Cough or plug or just mucus or lung damage. But when you breathed in things were good.

Lauren-I know that sometimes when I blow my PFT's, I actually close my throat-I'm trying to blast the air out and it actually restricts the flow. So, I have to work at not tightening up everything when I do the big blow out. This does affect my numbers.

I have this same problem that tleigh has and they always tell me just to blow out easy and not blow out really hard because they thinking that hard blast is closing off my air ways and if I blow out easy there is a big different in my numbers
