My 4 yr old just did her PFT's for the first time this week. They said the most important number to look at was the FEV1. She scored 153 and they were very happy. What exactly does this number mean?

They take your daughters weight and height and then using those measurements, they predict how ,uch air she should be able to blow out in a second. Since she scored 153 (I take it that meaning 153%?), so that means, 153%. Meaning that she blew out 100% of what her body is predicted to blow out and 53% EXTRA. Thats very good.

Exactly... the small Airways are also important (I think they are called FEF 25%-75%?), especially as lung troubles worsen. And to be scientific, FEV1 stands for something like Forced Expired Volume/1second. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

anon and noday are exactly correct, CF patients are natural RT's! I will encourage you to keep up the good work, you seem to be winning the battle, hopefully the war is a very long one. The more you stay on top of things the better off you will be.
