PHARMACEUTICAL firm Pharmaxis has received regulatory approval from the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration to market the drug Bronchitol to treat cystic fibrosis.

Pharmaxis said yesterday Bronchitol, designed to reduce build-up of mucus in the lungs, had been approved for the treatment of cystic fibrosis in adults and children over six years to augment dornase alfa, or in patients intolerant of, or inadequately responsive to, dornase alfa.

"The TGA's decision is the first approval for Bronchitol anywhere in the world and is an historic milestone for the company," Pharmaxis chief Alan Robertson said.

"It is fitting for a product . . . discovered and developed in Australia to be made available first to Australian patients."
