Hi,
I have a few questions. Most staph can be treated by oral antibiotics, including zithromax. What does Aidan's culture show? What is the staph sensitive to? So I'd ask the doctor is it absolutely necessary for an IV. Although I can't imagine why it would be. I think IV drugs are very tough on the body and the whole PICC thing is stressful. And just because someone cultures staph doesn't mean it's causing infection which is true in the case of your son at the moment.
Also you said that the first 2 surgeries they wanted the infections to be mostly cleared. So they operated with an active infection before, but while your son has no infection, they won't operate?
But the bigger question is why is he having to have so many surgeries? What are the sources that keep causing these problems? Are the doctors addressing this other than Nasal Rinses and sprays?
I was scheduled for surgery for 100% blockage on one side. It was most likely one of the sources of constant pseudomonas lung infections for me. I avoided the surgery the last minute by getting the blockage open using natural means and some meds. My doctor addressed allergies and irritants which cause swelling in the nasal passages as well as the lungs. I had to clean up my home environment/diet in terms of allergy control. Then in addition to Nasal Rinses/nassal sprays which include Nasalcrom, Astilin, and Nasonex (or similar), Claritin -- the key drug was Singulair. My doctor says that it works in her practice 95% of the time to shrink nasal passages, helping people avoid nasal surgeries. You can google this and give the doctor the info. If your doctor is against this, I would ask if you can try this. You can't keep putting this kid though this hellacious cycle of surgeries.
The most important thing really though is to check the allergy/irritant connection because drugs can only do so much if the source that is making him sick is still there. There are a number of recent threads that talk about how to clean up your environment and I can help direct you.
