My home care company's protocol is once within the first 24 hours and then once every week. I usually refuse the first dressing change because they always want to do it the same day, literally an hour or two after I got the PICC placed. I don't really think this is necessary as my arm is still sore and the PICC is placed in the hospital in a sterile environment as opposed to my kitchen table. They just don't want to make another visit the following day so they want to do it while they are here to deliver/explain the medication. Funny thing is that the last two time I was IV the home care nurses had no idea how to use the eclipse balls, so I actually had to teach them how they work!!! But that's a whole other story. So anyway, I usually end up getting my first dressing change a couple days later when they come to draw my peak/trough levels, and then once a week after that.
