So im being admitted into hospital tommorow, while talking to my CF nurse about options she mentioned I could get a Picc line and go home or I can stay in hospital, its my choice.I have always stayed in the hospital until I was off IV meds, ive never taken it home with me,I worry that if im at home they cant monitor me as well.
Do you prefer to have yur IV meds at home or in hospital?
I talked to one of my friends about it and he said he hated having it at home so im just curious about your opinions.
thankyou

My husband had a PICC line in while in the hospital for a while then he was released to go home where he was on it for another 2 weeks. A nurse came to show both of us how to clean out the lines, how to care for the area during a shower, how to hook it up, replace the battery in the portable machine, etc. All was very easy for both of us to learn. Eventually he wanted to do it without my help which I understand and he did it fine. The nurse said that many are not able or willing to do it on their own so she thought that was great of him to even attempt it. The nurse routinely checked every few days to see how he was doing and it took no time.

If you don't like having to do most of that yourself or like making sure you are around to get your medicine at a certain time then I think it would be best to stay in the hospital. But I say if you are confident and comfortable enough it might be worth a shot. At least you are in the comfort of your own home through it all and I am sure if it gets to rough, they will be willing to admit to the hospital for the duration of the time. Good luck with everything.

I hate being stuck in the hospital for any length of time, and actually the last two times I went in I got worse. I always do meds at home and I love it! I can do whatever I want and relax without getting stressed/depressed about being stuck in a hospital room for a week or more. It depends on the person, people who are more independent like doing ivs at home because then you're in control over your schedule and its nice not having people wake you up in the middle of the night to check vitals. When I do meds at home I go in once a week for pfts and blood work.

I hate the hospital but I tend to get better faster when I'm in. Having a RT come in and take care of my neb-cups and all that stuff is great. But I do get depressed, and the food sucks. Maybe turn the corner in house and make sure You are on the right meds and go home on home IVS. Doing the drugs at home is pretty easy.

its 50/50 for me..because i like being home and being able to go out and do things...although you are right you DONT get the care you need when at home...i believe its best to stay in the hospital because you get treated for everything....good luck i hope everything goes well for you and i hope you get better soon...

My hospital is over 2 hours away from me and I live in the middle of mowhere in the country, I also dont have someone to help me all the time so if I want anything I gotta pretty much do it myself, these are pretty much the other reasons I havent thought about it, but ive heard of some people having IV for quite a long time,I think once I start showing improvment in there and im sure this time im getting the right meds i'll come home, thing is last time I went in I was there for 2 weeks and i just got worse.I have a feeling this might be a long stay, im just a worrier,I worry im taking up a bed someone else needs >.<
but imma do whatever it takes to get better this time, I just got Dance Dance Revolution for my PS3 Move and im eager to play it (its amazing excercise lol)
