PICC line complaints

Hi, my son has been on at home IVs and probably will be on them for several more months. He's on his 4th PICC line. He's complaining that when his dressing gets changed it feels like he's getting punched in the stomach. The other day when it the dressing was being changed he vomited. Any thoughts? Suggestions? etc...
Agree, call the doctor immediately. All they will do in an ultrasound or xray to check it. I'm sure he'll be fine but that could be potentially serious if not checked out right away!
They know about it, as he has some difficulties from it when the inserted it. They don't seem concerned.. I think its somehow over stimulating the vagus nerve.. We are going in on the 5th and I think I will bring up the possibility of a port. Of course, I am concerned that the same thing may happen with a port.. sighhhhh...

Glad its not an emergency. Only twice have I had piccs bother a nerve in 20 years. Once during insertion they didn't realize they were hitting a nerve. It was awful and I have permanent nerve damage from it, albeit mild. They didn't have ultrasound or fluro in 'those days' of picc insertion.
And currently on Iv's, I've had pain in my forearm and back of my hand, plus occasional shoulder pain. Got it checked out and the picc is hitting a nerve near my clavicle. Harmless, but a pain. Slowly shrugging my shoulder helps, when the pain is coming on. And warm compresses-not on the picc, but anywhere else the pain is.
Hi Roe,
I see your son has Mycobacterium Abscessus , as do I.. As you know when you have Myco it is a long haul ..
I would recommend a port. It was the best thing for me. As far as the dressing change I could only think maybe he doesn't like the feel of the dressing coming off.
I know in the past I've gotten myself worked up for things that needed to be done. Even w/ a port , when it is accessed he will have dressing changes.
I hope you figure it out. I'm sure its stressful to both of you.
Take care joni
