Dear Cf Family:

I am a 31 year old with cf who got sick about 3 weeks ago and have never gotten my voice back. I am so scared.. The ENT told me that it was due to me taking all my inhaled stuff that keeps me healthy but I have never heard of this happening especially since I have been doing them for over 20 years now. My fev1 is at it's highest surprisingly (normaly around 65% and was 71% last week when checked). I wonder if my voice will ever come back. Anyone else have this happen and how did you treat?

Thanks,
Kelly

I once lost my voice for 2 weeks with a bad virus, plus the inhaled meds making me worse.
My sister in law (non cf) caught a bad virus and is in her 2nd week without a voice. And she's perfectly healthy. There is a bad virus going around right now with this exact thing. So don't worry-it could be that. Things hit us harder. I'm sure you'll be ok. Just need lots of rest and fluids!

Hi there,

I think if you caught a bug and then added your normal inhaled meds to the mix, that you might have just irritated the vocal cords a little too much. It happens to me from time to time when I lose my voice for a week or more. Sometimes it's also due to acid reflux - is that a problem for you? Hopefully it comes back soon because that's no fun

When I used nebulized meds I always had that side effect and I often got it with certain IV abx.

When using the nebulized meds, it helped if I used my albuterol inhaler about 45 min. before the nebulizer.

Early this year I lost mine for about 6 weeks. I had my ENT check my vocal chords for damage and you should do that too, to rule that out. I didn't have damage and he said at that point my chords were very inflammed and only complete rest of them would bring back my voice. Incidentally, whispering is worse for your vocal chords than talking, so try not to be whispering a lot. I had to switch to writing notes. I carried a wipe off board with me when I went out to stores. After about 5 days of total silence I tested my voice and started getting it back.
