PORT Help Please

My port seems to have a kink in it of some sort.. I have been coughing so hard the past few days that they think maybe a coughed a kink in my port.. They changed the needle to a bigger size needle, changed the dressing.. They still cant get any blood out at all and it is barely flusing.

My meds that are supposed to go in over two hours are not done going in and it is hour 3...

I am waitig for my nurse to call me back but they said I most likely have to go in and get a study done to make sure I dont' have a blood clot or kink in... They are hesistant to do this because they feel like I need such strict bedrest....but feel like it may be important.

Is there anything I can do at home to fix this.... I don't really have anyone to drive me in to the hospital right now, well I do I but I don't want to bother them and I know I can't drive myself...

If it is a clot they can have a home nurse try TPA which is basically like draino for lines. If there is a clot that is clear-able, it will get it out. If that doesn't work then yeah I guess there is a kink or some other malfunction. I had a really bad clot in my first port and they tried TPA on it multiple times.. eventually they took me in for a dye study to see what was wrong and they couldn't even get the dye in. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> I know it sucks but if it's that hard to flush it's best to get it figured out asap since it's not going to resolve itself.

Good luck! (especially if you already went to the hospital for it)

Hmmm, I had a clot once and they infused TPA. That did the trick immediately. I hope they figure this out with a simple infusion and you don't get yanked from bedrest.
