Port Information for family members...

We decided on a port for Josh during the time he was being treated for the weird myco. His PICC kept having problems ranging from getting clogged to a rash from the dressing. It was so frustrating, not to mention uncomfortable.

The port surgery was quick and easy, not much recovery. He's had it for 6 years with no problem.

The only thing that bothers him/us about the port is visual.Since he's thin, itis quite pronounced on his chest. As a mom, I understand your mom's reaction. The port, (as with any medical apparatus)is a constant reminder of the illness, whereas when a PICC is removed there is no visual sign. I know it sounds like denial, but sometimes it's nice to look at your child, even adult childwithout seeing the CF first.

Of course, having said that, I wouldn't change anything. The bottom line is his medical need, not aesthetics.
