and Jane- thanks for starting this topic... its helped me a lot! and hopefully you too! update us on the boys health? and what ends up happening with the port! hope nurse-zilla is being a little less evil these days!</end quote>

Yes it has definately helped and I really appreciate the input!

Josh will be in until Monday when they put in his new PICC, unless the docs can squeeze him in for a port soon. He's just hanging around his room BORED! We even watched the Red Sox game today and he's a Yankees Fan OMG!

He's feeling really well except for when he gets his imipenem. But his lungs sound great and his sats are 99-100 (on room air). All good. Jesse's doing ok onthese meds- only tired. Thanks for asking.

I hate Meropenem, I'm always on it, just got off yesterdayYIPEE anyways, it doesn't make me nauseous but it makes my digestive system go haywire!!!!! and the smell of Mero is soooo strong! And it has to be kept on ice, which I'm on it continuously so I have an ice pack in my bag (which comes in handy on hot days )

Glad the boys are doing good, hope Josh can get out soon!

Yes, it is from the imi. He was on meropenem before and never had a problem. They looked into that again but imi is better for the mycobacteria.

danyell- i liveeee by emla... its like my savior. haha, i always get it for everything, but didnt think you could use it for ports (guess not!). the only problem is though, when i get IVs in my hand for surgery/etc. my veins get really dehydrated and shrink from it, so im only alowwed to have it on for like a half hour. oh well, its still definitly helps! </end quote>

I cant use emla cream for IVs anywhere for sugeries because my viens do the same as yours as well has play hide-n-seek. It usually ends up being more trouble than it is worth. But since the port a little metal cicle type thing under your skin, it doesnt go anywhere. So you can use the emla and it wouldnt bother it at all, just numbs the skin. You can leave it up there for a half hour to two hours, it wouldnt matter. I recommend at least a hour.

What is meropenem? I've never heard of it. is it an antibiotic?

meropenem is an ultra-broad spectrum injectable antibiotic for a wide variety of serious infections, including meningitis and pneumonia.

imipenem - An antibiotic drug used to treat severe or very resistant infection. It belongs to the family of drugs called carbapenems.

Carbapenems are a class of beta-lactam antibiotics.

The following drugs belong to the carbapenem class:

Imipenem/cilastatin

Thank you all for sharing this info. As the mom of two girls with CF, I have always wondered about this but was afraid to really ask. You have all helped to take the fear away!!

Jane - Sorry, I have been away from the board for a few months due to a myriad of circumstances...but, I'm attaching a picture of my port after it had been put in for two weeks. You can still the scar and that there's still more healing needing to occur. Also, note the area that looks like a pimple on my neck...that is actually where the "tunnel" is from my port into my jugular. That is barely noticeable now, but you can still see the scar over my port.

I really had no major issues post surgery, just took a few weeks to get used to something foreign and sticking out (only a little). (I don't think Josh would be able to swim for a couple of weeks until the scar heals up enough.) I love my port compared to the piccs. I feel there is much more freedom, and it does not hurt/irritate me nearly as much as the piccs did.

The only thing I would do differently next time is to have it put on my left side. I tend to carry everything on my right side (over my shoulder - like my purse, my IV bag, laptop computer, etc), but with it accessed (as it is now), I have to carry everything on my left side, and it just throws me all off balance.

I love it and would have it done again anyday over ever having another picc.
this was the day after the arm port was placed

you can see the bruising and swelling is almost gone, and half the
stitched are gone

I took this pic tonight, you can barely see my port, if you go up
from the scar you can see an area that looks slightly blue/green
thats my port

to littledebbie, the arm ports come with some advantages as well as
disadvantages like all ports, the main advantage was that the arm
port could be placed with a local as opposed to a GA.
some of the disadvantages are that I now only have one arm for
blood taking, which can be a real pain in the butt especially with
bad veins... I have to admit I am pretty rough with my ports, this
one in particular gets a raw deal, lol, Ive caught it on table
tops, had dogs scratch it etc, banged it, but all in all it is not
a bad placement...and still going strong after 7 years!

edited to add: I am also guilty of pulling my needles out by
sitting my fat arse on the IV line, LOL,
and another disadvantage is I need someone to hold the port for me
so I can access it myself, but since its in my right arm (Im right
handed) it also makes it difficult, I also have tremors from tx LOL
so that makes pinning the tail on the donkey so to speak
interesting....

I think thats it....
From what I have read much of this decision depends on the person doing the insertion. Some people have actually been asked & their request accomodated or at least as much as possible & others never get offered any input.....definitley something you want to find out!

I was asked where I wanted my port put. I think you should have a right to ask if they can put it where you would like it and if they say no then ask why. There could be a good medical reason in certain cases why ports shouldnt be placed in certain areas for certain people. But I think you should be able to tell them where you would like it put.
