Port Question

I've had a bunch of surgeries for various things including ports, and the area near the site is always numb for varying lengths of time. An abdominal surgery I had 15 years ago left a little spot on my stomach permanently numb. My previous two ports were numb for a few weeks, and my current one was also numb for a few weeks, and really sensitive/painful right over the port because they placed it so close to the skin. I'd say give it another week or so... try putting some heat on it maybe, get the blood flowing. If you're still worried and it doesn't go away after another week or two, maybe ask your dr.

Hey Lisa,

Don't laugh, but I just spent 5 minutes touching the skin around and over my port to see if I could feel a difference! My conclusion: the skin over my port isn't "numb", but it does feel kind of different when I touch it. I think maybe the nerves are damaged from the incision and/or the constant accessing? But I've had my port for 8 years with no problems, so I don't think the numbness thing should worry you unless it is coupled with other problems.

Look on the bright side: he'll never feel the access needle at all!

LOL Piper I just did the same thing. I have been feeling around on mine too ROFL!!!!
The top of mine around the center isnt numb but it does feel different from the other areas around it. The skin is so tight that it makes it feel diff. I got mine placed almost two years ago. So I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you start getting other symptoms.
My first port was the same. It was a little more "numb" on the top than my new one. So dont worry too much.
