Ports and Blood Clots

Hey everyone,

Well after having 2 pics in the past year and after the last one was pulled they found 2 blood clots in my arm and the 3rd day I had this past one a week ago I developted a SVT in my arm at the entrace of the cather site. They told me that my veins were too small to use piccs anymore. The blood did not have enough room to move around the picc in the vein. So now when I return home from a fmaily wedding the told me its back to another port.

I had a port for 8 years and as some of you had heard my story the end of it was a bad situation. They went to flush it, pulled back got a blood retun he flushed and it sent the most intense burning pain from my port across my chest and down the center of my chest. I coudnt breathe, I passed out and coded on them. They say they did an MRI and didnt see any sign off a blood clot. I am super nervous since the past 2 times I have develpoeted clots that I will with this port.

Has anyone gotten a blod clot in there port either in the line or at the end of the line?

What the tech swears it was, was that there was a clot on the end of the line, he pulled back got blood, and the end of the clot was like a flap on the end of the line and it moved some enought to get the drawback but then when he pushed it that it broke off and went straight to my heart. I dont know what to believe, others say it could of been an infection.

What im confused is that I felt the burning pain go from where my port was across horizontaly across my chest to the center of my chest and then go verically down to the center of my chest, then in 2 secs I couldnt breathe. If it was a clot would I of felt the pain from the port area? I dont know?

Something that can happen is that filamentous strands can attach themselves to the inside of the end of the line. I had this happen with my old port. I was able to get blood return, but it wouldn't infuse. The way the interventional radiology team described it was that the action of pushing against that fibrous junk was pushing it into the pathway of the tube. Pulling back on it got it out of the way.

I have not had ongoing problems with clots. Even if the nurses say protocol has changed and they refuse to flush with heparin, I get the doctor to order it. The last thing I need is a clot in my port due to negligence. I'm also on those heparin shots whenever I'm in the hospital. This is to prevent DVT, and I'm told it doesn't necessarily help with the port.

The tech's description of it was sounds right on target. I'm not sure what made you code, but if it had been a clot that got pushed through your heart, I think it would have gone to your brain and caused a stroke, not chest pain. I'm no expert though. Sounds like it was just that fibron sheath (the filamentous junk in the line.)

Bottom line, if you're worried about clots, tell your doctor and they can give you meds to help control that.

I would be nervous as hell too from what you described. Did the doctor do tests after your code, such as a CT scan of the chest to look for blood clots in the lungs or what is called a VQ scan (perfusion scan)...that would certainly explain your extreme shortness of breath. Your chest pain is really odd though...burning pain from port to chest is wierd. I have had blood clots to my lungs and I did experience alot of shortness of breath with low O2 sats, no real pain but I hear that there can be alot of pain with PE's (pulmonary emboli). I would most certainly talk to your doctor regarding your fears and future risks. As far as getting clots in my port, yes that did happen to me according to my radiologist when my old one had trouble but fortunately they were able to fix it.
I pray that everything works out for you...hugs, Jenn <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

After they stableized me they took me down and did a MRI and it showed no blood clots. The told me that if there was one that would do that as soon as it hit my hreat that they should of hopefully seen something. I think that is why they thought maybe this was an infection. I had an at home nurse say that this happened to a 5 year old she had and it was an infection. I mean what would go just like that in 10 secs or less and make me code?
