I noticed tom is not online right now so I will try to answer your questions.
If your port is not accessed you will only see the "patch". There will not be anything on your skin or port at that time.
When accessing your port, You will push a needle into the port. There is a cathetar connected to your port, under your skin, that is inside a vein. So there is no finding a vein. The vein is already "accessed". The port is a round peice of metal with a "cork" like thing in the middle. You will push the needle into the "cork". That cork is connected to the cathetar that will feed your vein.
When your port is accessed there will be a dressing similiar to your pic dressing. It covers the port for sterility. That dressing needs to be covered while you shower. As you know the tegaderms are not very water proof and will peel off if it gets too wet. Therefore it needs to be covered. I ususally use a biohazard bag with tape.
If you want to swim while using ivs you will need to deaccess your port. And then reaccess it after your swim to continue your iv therapy.
